Bharat Guthikonda, MD, MBA, FAANS, FACS is Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at LSU Health Shreveport in Shreveport, Louisiana. He has been a member of the department since 2007, after completing his neurosurgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine and a skull base fellowship at the University of Cincinnati.
His areas of expertise include skull base surgery, endoscopic skull base and intracranial surgery, cerebrovascular surgery, and general neurosurgery. His research primarily focuses on anatomic skull base research, clinical outcomes research, and the socioeconomics of neurosurgery. He genuinely enjoys being a part of a strong neurosurgical residency program and is passionate about training the next generation of neurosurgeons, especially in microsurgical techniques.
Dr. Guthikonda is ABNS board-certified and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Senior Society of Neurological Surgeons (SNS), the Society of University Neurosurgeons (SUN), and the Southern Neurosurgical Society. He is a past President of the Louisiana Neurosurgical Society (LANS) and started the annual hands-on course associated with the LANS annual meeting. He is quite involved in the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies (CSNS) holding leadership roles including Medical Legal Committee Chair, Communication and Education Committee Chair, and Southwest Quadrant Chair. He also served as a member of the CSNS-AANS Washington Committee. He is a current member of both the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Meeting Scientific Program Committees. With a special passion for skull base and endoscopic skull base surgery, Dr. Guthikonda is very involved with the North American Skull Base Society (NASBS) serving as the current co-chair of the NASBS Pre-meeting Course, a member of the NASBS Annual Meeting Scientific Program Committee, and a frequent faculty member of the NASBS summer resident course. He has given over 300 presentations at national and international meetings and published more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, comments, and book chapters. Dr. Guthikonda has participated in global neurosurgery as part of annual medical mission trips to Duhok in the Kurdistan region of Iraq by bringing needed neurosurgical equipment, delivering lectures on key neurosurgical topics, and mentoring local neurosurgeons in performing complex intracranial surgical procedures. He helped start and develop the transsphenoidal pituitary surgery program in Kurdistan.
To gain more knowledge about the business and financial part of neurosurgery, Dr. Guthikonda earned his MBA from Brandeis University in May 2020.
During his spare time, he loves spending time with his family and is the proud father of two boys, Rowen (18) and Avi (15). He has always enjoyed running and ran track/cross country in college at Cornell University. He has continued this hobby and has completed three marathons and numerous half marathons. He also enjoys playing tennis and cooking.
