Carl Heilman MD is a Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at TUSM. He served as the Chair of the Department at Tufts from 2005 to 2024. Dr. Heilman specializes in skull base brain tumor surgery. He is a past president of numerous societies including the Boston Society of Neurology and Psychiatry, the New England Neurosurgical Society, the Society of University Neurosurgeons, and the North American Skull Base Society.
Dr. Heilman served for 6 years as a Director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS term 2015-2021). He was the Chair of the Neurosurgery Primary Written Board examination in 2017 and 2018. He developed the Neuroanatomy Mastery exam for the ABNS, which is now a required examination for all USA PGY2 neurosurgery residents. He was secretary of the ABNS in 2019 and 2020 and served as the Chair of the ABNS in 2020-21.
Dr. Heilman is a co-founder of Cerevasc, Inc. Cerevasc is developing a minimally invasive shunt for communicating hydrocephalus that can be placed through a venous catheter without open surgery. The shunt device (eShunt) has been placed in over 80 people in pilot studies performed in the USA and Argentina. A randomized prospective FDA pivotal trial of the eShunt vs. a ventriculoperitoneal shunt is currently underway for the treatment of normal pressure hydrocephalus.
