Dr. Keki Turel was a Professor of Neurosurgery at Bombay Hospital and headed the Dept from 1993 to 2011 and now also Professor Emeritus. He has been a witness to the recent evolution of neurosurgery from the pre CT scan era of the seventies until the evolution of most modern imaging and operating room technology.
In fact, he was the earliest pioneer of microneurosurgery in India which is now the basis of all surgeries on brain, spine and nerves, revolutionising the results by increasing the surgical scope and safety, and minimising morbidity and mortality, which at one time was the bane of neurosurgery. He has a string of qualifications from India, Germany, UK and USA and was awarded Honoris Causa FRCS from Edinburgh without examination in 2002.
Dr. Turel is also credited with the successful removal of two of world’s largest Brain Tumors, in 1982 and 1996, each weighing over half a kilo. He was also the first Indian surgeon to have the courage and conviction to operate on the first two AIDS patients in late eighties when none dared to even touch such patients. He has a ‘healer’s touch’ and revived or brought back to normal life several patients who were declared dead or written off by other practitioners. He has also had to his credit operating some of the longest neurosurgical operations, lasting 27 hrs each, on 3 occasions.
Dr. Turel has described some original X-ray signs, has innovated surgical techniques, and also designed and patented a few surgical instruments. Known for extensive documentation of his cases and surgical operations, he has travelled to lecture and conduct microsurgical courses and workshops in 60 countries of the world. He has also helped
Recipient of numerous awards and accolades in India and abroad, and a Member of over thirty national and International organisations, Dr. Turel has been the Past President of prestigious National and International Societies viz, Asian Oceanian Society of Skull Base Surgery, Academia Eurasiana Neurochirurgica, Bombay Neurosciences Association and Neurological Society of India, and has organised landmark International and National conferences in Mumbai. In addition to his busy practice and travel, he is currently preoccupied with setting up of an International Neurosciences Centre in Mumbai.
Finally, apart from his academic achievements, Dr. Turel is also an acclaimed photographer, film maker, stage actor, sportsman, linguist, musician and priest of the Zoroastrian faith.
