Medical Student
Geisinger Commonwealth School Of Medicine, US
Julian Michael Burwell, MS is Doctor of Medicine (MD) Candidate in the class of 2027 at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. His journey to medicine has been unqiue and reflects a commitment to applying diverse skills to the field of neurocritical care.
Julian began his career studying music at John Brown University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. Then spent several years working as a touring musician, honing his creativity, adaptability, and collaboration skills. Seeking new challenges, Julian then transitioned into a role in operations management at Budget Blinds, where he helped lead one of the nation's most successful franchises for seven years.
In this position, Julian developed a keen interest in optimizing systems and processes to drive better outcomes. They realized that their analytical mindset and problem-solving abilities could be applied to the world of healthcare. This realization, combined with a long-standing passion for the basic sciences, motivated Julian to return to school and pursue a Master's degree in biochemistry at University of Colorado.
Now as a medical student, Julian is determined to synthesize his unique skill set and experiences to make a meaningful impact in the field of neurocritical care. He is particularly interested in the intersection of operations and neuroscience, and how principles from operations management can be leveraged to enhance the care of critically ill neurological patients.
Julian is currently conducting research in the areas of neurotrauma and cerebrovascular neurosurgery under the mentorship of Dr. Schirmer at Geisinger Health Systems Their work focuses on utilizing machine learning techniques to develop predictive models for identifying patients at risk of delayed neurological deterioration in the intensive care unit setting. Through this research, Julian aims to help clinicians intervene earlier and improve outcomes for this vulnerable patient population.
Alongside their research pursuits, Julian is the First Generation Chair of the Class of 2027, active in the local chapter of AANS, actively involved as an editor at the school's journal, and a regular volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. Outside of school, Julian is an avid cyclist and enjoys spending time with his family including board games with his wife, reading with his son, and playing fetch with his two dogs.
As Julian progresses through medical training, he remains committed to becoming a physician-scientist who can not only provide exceptional clinical care but also advance the field through innovative research at the interface of operations, data science, and neurosurgical care. His ultimate goal is to establish themself as a leader in Neurotrauma and make lasting contributions that benefit patients facing critical neurological illnesses.
