Claudia Fernandez Perez, MHS; Georgetown University School of Medicine; Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Neurosurgery Visiting Medical Student
Claudia is a second year medical student at the Georgetown University School of Medicine (GUSOM). Prior to medical school, she completed an MHS in Global Health Economics at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, wanting to better understand how to integrate the study of health economics and medicine to address availability and accessibility of resources in resource limited settings. She then spent a year working as a research coordinator at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, applying her newly learned skills to the application of behavioral health economics to increase uptake of screening and other preventative measures in the prevention of primarily breast cancer. Combining these experiences and her training in neuroscience, Claudia is currently working to understand the experiences of patients within the neurosurgical continuum in Nigeria and Uganda. Additionally, she is continuing to grow her understanding of the field of neurosurgery and its clinical practice, and how to better support the needs of patients and their barriers to excellent care. Claudia hopes to pursue a career at the intersection of healthcare, health economics, and neurosurgery – empowering patients and supporting partnership and capacity building in global health and global surgery.
