BIOGRAPHY OF DR JOSEPH OBANDE
Dr. Joseph Orinya Obande is an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery with the University of Abuja, Nigeria, who has upheld excellence, innovation, and compassion in the field of neurosurgery. With over 14 years of experience as a board-certified neurosurgeon, medical educator, researcher, and administrator, Dr. Obande has dedicated his life to transforming the lives of patients, advancing medical knowledge, and building resilient healthcare systems in Nigeria and beyond. Dr. Obande pursued his medical education at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, where he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1998. His early years in medicine were marked by a deep fascination with the human brain and its complexities, which led him to specialize in neurosurgery. He completed his postgraduate residency in neurosurgery at the West African College of Surgeons in 2011 and further honed his skills through a post-doctoral fellowship at Weill Cornell Medical College and New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York, USA. His training also included a stint as a World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) trainee in Recife, Brazil, where he gained invaluable international exposure.
Dr. Obande’s career is a blend of clinical expertise, academic rigor, and community service. Doubling as Honorary Chief Consultant Neurosurgeon at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, he has played a pivotal role in establishing and developing the neurosurgery division, creating a hub for service provision, training, and research. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping the next generation of neurosurgeons, ensuring that they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to tackle the unique challenges of neurosurgical care in resource-limited settings.
A focused researcher, Dr. Obande has worked on congenital disorders, neurotrauma, and pediatric neurosurgery, areas that hold the promise of transformative breakthroughs. As the local Principal Investigator for the CRASH-3 trial of The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), he contributed to groundbreaking research on the use of tranexamic acid in traumatic brain injury, a study that has had a global impact on emergency neurosurgical care. His work has been published in prestigious journals, and he is a respected reviewer for several international neurosurgery publications.
Dr. Obande’s commitment to excellence has earned him numerous accolades, including the University of Abuja 2023 Authors Award Bronze Medal, the Association of Resident Doctors’ Meritorious Award, and the Best Consultant Award from the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. His contributions to the CRASH-3 trial were recognized with a Certificate of Contribution from LSHTM, and he has been commended by the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies for his outstanding performance as a resident.
