Medical Student
UC Davis
Gabriel Urreola is a fourth-year medical student at the University of California, Davis, with a deep commitment to advancing neurosurgical innovation and healthcare accessibility. Raised in East County San Diego in a single-mother household alongside his two older siblings, he navigated the challenges of underserved immigrant communities while remaining steadfast in his pursuit of education.
Gabriel earned his Bachelor of Science from UCLA, where he spearheaded initiatives to expand educational access, bringing over 1,500 inner-city students—including those from his own high school—to college conferences focused on financial aid, admissions, and wellness. After completing a post-baccalaureate program at UCSF, he dedicated his gap years to serving unhoused and undocumented populations in Skid Row, Los Angeles, managing quality improvement projects to bridge gaps in healthcare access.
As a medical student, Gabriel has embedded himself in neurosurgical research. He spent his first two years working in a systems neuroscience lab and is now at the forefront of augmented reality innovations in neurosurgery, investigating its applications in spinal surgery. Additionally, his research explores intriguing correlations between animal and human neurological diseases.
At the AANS 2025 conference, Gabriel will present multiple posters and deliver a talk on the integration of augmented reality navigation systems in spinal surgery, contributing to the future of precision neurosurgical techniques.
