MD/PhD Student
The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Providence RI
Owen P. Leary is an M.D./Ph.D. student at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and a member of the clinical research program administrative team at Brown Neurosurgery / Rhode Island Hospital Dept. of Neurosurgery. Owen is currently pursuing graduate study in Pathobiology, working under Dr. Nikos Tapinos MD PhD and Dr. Petra Klinge MD PhD at Brown. His thesis project is investigating the potential utiliy of non-coding RNA signatures of glioblastoma by profiling miRNA expression in peripheral blood samples in patients with and without disease. In the laboratory, he is investigating the possible regulatory role of specific miRNAs which show promise as biomarkers in also regulating glioma stem cell phenotypes in vitro.
Broadly, Owen had contributed to many clinical and translational research projects assessing the application of novel technologies for diagnosis and treatment of various neurosurgical pathologies, including traumatic brain injury, brain and spinal column tumors, degenerative spinal disease, tethered cord syndrome and normal pressure hydrocephalus. He is particularly interested in work focused on new diagnostic methods, neuro-oncology, and approaches to optimizing outcomes following elective and emergent spine surgery.
