Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins, was a SUNY Distinguished Professor at the University at Buffalo, revolutionized stroke treatment by pioneering minimally invasive endovascular techniques, most notably the use of clot-busting drugs and wire mesh devices, significantly improving patient survival and recovery; he transformed UB’s Neurosurgery Department into a leading program, mentoring numerous successful neurosurgeons who continue to advance his groundbreaking work; his vision extended beyond clinical practice, driving the creation of the Gates Vascular Institute and the Jacobs Institute, fostering collaboration and innovation within the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus; recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Chancellor Charles P. Norton Medal, Dr. Hopkins’ legacy as a compassionate clinician, innovative researcher, and influential mentor leaves an indelible mark on neurosurgery and patient care worldwide.
