John A. Wilson, MD, FAANS, FACS is the David L. and Sally Kelly Professor and vice-Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery of Wake Forest University School of Medicine where he also serves as the co-Executive Director of the Neuroscience Institute. Since 1993 he has been involved in graduate medical education at Wake Forest including service as Neurosurgical Residency Program Director from 2007-2012 as well as Graduate Medical Education Committee and Chair Chief Resident’s Council 2008-2012.
Dr Wilson graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1982 and completed his neurosurgical residency at Tufts University New England Medical Center in 1990. After completing a fellowship at the Paracelsus Clinic in Osnabruk, Germany, Wilson began neurosurgical practice in Pittsburgh at Allegheny General Hospital. In 1993 he was recruited to the neurosurgical faculty at Wake Forest University School of medicine in Winston Salem, N.C. where he maintains an active practice focusing primarily on cerebrovascular and skull base disorders.
He has served as an advisor to the North Carolina state Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee and the national Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee. Dr. Wilson has served as an officer in a numerous national and regional societies including: as President of the North Carolina Neurosurgical Society, President of the Southern Neurosurgical Society, President of the Society of University Neurosurgeons, Chair of the joint American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons Cerebrovascular Section, and Chair of the AANS/CNS Washington Committee. He currently serves as Past President of the AANS, and on the boards of Neuropoint Alliance, Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation, and Neurosurgery PAC.
In 2018 he began service on the American Board of Neurological Surgery and in 2021 was appointed Treasurer of the organization. He was elected to the American Board of Medical Specialties in 2019 as a member board empowered representative.
Dr Wilson lives in Winston Salem, NC with his wife Marian. They have two adult children, Jake and Megan. He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Winston Salem and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Cycling Center and the Crosby Scholars Community Partnership. The NCC, located in Winston-Salem, N.C, is a non-profit organization developing the country’s premier training destination for elite cyclists, which will also providing athletes access to leading-edge sports medicine research as well as acting as a community resource for cycling-related fitness, activity, education and advocacy. Crosby Scholars is a unique college access program for all 6 to 12th-grade students in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. The program prepares students academically, financially, and personally for successful college admission and aims to ensure that every public school student in Forsyth County has the opportunity to attend college. Crosby Scholars now serves more than 10,000 students per year.
