Dr. Carolina Gesteira Benjamin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Health Systems in Miami, Florida. She received her medical degree from Georgetown University and completed a residency in Neurological Surgery at New York University in Manhattan under the chairmanship of Dr.John Golfinos. She subsequently completed a fellowship in skull base surgery with Dr.Chandrananth Sen as well as a radiosurgery fellowship with Dr. Douglas Kondziolka at NYU. She joined the faculty at University of Miami in September 2019. She is the co Director of the Skull Base Program and Fellowship at the Univeristy of Miami. She is the Director of the Center for Advanced Stereotactic Radiosurgery at the University of Miami and the Director of the CANES Skull Base Laboratory. She also serves as the Diversity Chair and Education Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery. She is the Skull Base Section Editor for Operative Neurosurgery and an Assistant Editor for Neurosurgery.
Dr.Benjamin specializes in cranial neurosurgery, with a particular interest skull base surgery. She treats all aspects of skull base pathology using both open approaches as well as using the endoscopic endonasal and expanded endonasal approaches. She also treats all areas of neuro-oncology, including primary brain tumors as well as brain metastases and has an active radiosurgery practice.
Dr.Benjamin is a member of various academic societies including the CNS, AANS, NASBS, and WFNS. She has served on the scientific committee for the NASBS, is on the Education and Anatomy Committee for the WFNS, and is a part of the Rhoton and Yasargil Neurosurgical Society. Her research interests include microsurgical anatomical dissections and advanced neuroimaging to compare open and endonasal approaches to the skull base and the carotid artery. She is also interested in studying the molecular biology of skull base tumors to help guide surgical management and post operative adjuvant therapy. Finally, her current clinical research into stereotactic radiosurgery spans many conditions.
