I graduated from medical school at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) in 1989. Neurosurgery specialization at Santa Casa Misericórdia de Porto Alegre from 1990-1994. Fellowship at Columbia University; Presbyterian Hospital – New York in 1995 and 1996. M.Sc. in Neurosurgery from the Federal University of São Paulo (1999) and a Doctorate in Neurosciences from the Federal University of São Paulo (2005). Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Caxias do Sul (UCS) since 1997.
Current positions are:
• Member of AO Foundation Board
Past-Chairperson of the AO Spine International Board.
• Vice-Rector at the University of Caxias do Sul (UCS).
• Coordinator of the Laboratory of Spinal Cord Diseases and Cellular Therapy since 2016.
• International Liaison of the AANS/CNS Section on Spine and Peripheral Nerves Disorders since 2016.
Prominent past positions are:
• Director of the Health Science Area from 2018-2022.
• Dean of the Medical School at the University of Caxias do Sul (UCS) from 2008-2016.
• President of the Caxias do Sul University Publishing House from 2020-2022.
• Coordinator of Health Science Post-Graduation Program in Medicine at UCS from 2016-2020.
• AO Spine Research Chair in Latin America from 2012-2015.
• AO Spine Regional Chair in Latin America from 2016-2019.
• Councilor of the Regional Council of Medicine of Rio Grande do Sul from 2013-2018.
• Member of the Ethics Committee of the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery from 2014-2016.
• Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine from 2015-2019
Awards and Acknowledgments received:
•International Lifetime Recognition Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). on April 30, 2022
• UCS University President Virvi Ramos Medal - Scientific Merit from the University Council of the University of Caxias do Sul on July 22, 2017.
• Order of Merit from the Council of Presidents of Brazilian Universities on October 2, 2017.
• José Correia Pincanço Medal for a relevant contribution to Medical Education in Brazil from the Brazilian Society of History of Medicine on October 27, 2017.
• Award from the City Council of Caxias do Sul for Services rendered to Health in the Municipality in May 2011.
