Dr. Shekar Kurpad is Professor of Neurosurgery, Senior Associate Dean of Neuroscience, and the Founding Director of the Wisconsin Institute of NeuroScience (WINS). WINS is a partnership between the Medical College of Wisconsin, Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Wisconsin, and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. Dr. Kurpad previously served as the Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, which he successfully led for over 10 years into one of the largest Departments of Neurosurgery in the country with 42 surgeons and scientists on faculty and over 200 employees.
Dr. Kurpad’s surgical practice focuses on the treatment of patients with degenerative and traumatic conditions of the spine and spinal cord, as well as benign and malignant tumors of the spinal column and spinal cord. Dr. Kurpad’s research interests have focused on the recovery of function for patients with spinal cord injury; specifically regenerative technologies and developing novel MRI-based imaging biomarkers for spinal cord injury and cervical myelopathy. Dr. Kurpad’s laboratory has been funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the NHH, and many foundations for over 20 years.
