Mika Niemelä MD PhD IFAANS received his MD in 1989 and neurosurgery board certification from Helsinki University in 1997. He finished his PhD thesis on hemangioblastomas and von Hippel-Lindau disease in 2000, and thereafter spend a year at Brigham and Women’s as a Visiting Professor-Research Fellow. In 2015, he became the Director of Neurosurgery at Helsinki University Hospital, Europe’s largest hospital network, and Professor of Neurosurgery at Helsinki University. His clinical and research focus is in vascular and skull base lesions close to 350 scientific papers and book chapters, and runs a busy clinical and experimental PhD program. committees. He is a past president of the Finnish Neurosurgical Society and former long-time international liaison in AANS/CNS and EANS CV section executive committee and an active member in the World Academy of Neurological Surgery (WANS)
