Prof. Francesco DiMeco, MD
Prof. Francesco DiMeco is Director of the Department of Neurosurgery at Fondazione Istituto
Neurologico C. Besta, full Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of the Residency Program in
Neurosurgery at University of Milan.
After completing the residency program, he attended a neurosurgical oncology fellowship at Johns
Hopkins Medical School gaining a considerable experience in loco-regional treatment of brain
tumors.
Focusing on neurosurgical oncology, he has published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers and
several book chapters (h-index: 67, Scopus) and distinguished himself as a co-author of the first
ever-published research that lead to the identification of tumor stem cells in glioblastomas and
novel treatment strategies by inducing tumor cells differentiation, publishing a pioneering article in
Nature and lately in Molecular Cancer.
Recently, his research has broadened to embrace the field of intraoperative imaging, becoming one
of the world’s leaders on intraoperative ultrasound in neurosurgery. At the same time, he started
developing a program on Focused Ultrasound for the experimental treatment of brain tumors.
Furthermore, he has founded the first neurosurgical simulation center in Europe (Besta NeuroSim
Center) which is also one of the best equipped simulation centers in the world.
