Mohammad Ali Aziz-Sultan, MD, MBA: Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School, Chief, Divisions of Vascular and Endovascular , Department of Neurosurgery, Brigham & Women’s
Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, Dr. Mohammad Ali Aziz-Sultan embarked on his lifelong commitment to health and innovation after receiving his Medical Degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Sultan proceeded to complete his Neurosurgical Residency with an in-folded Radiology Fellowship at the University of Miami, followed by two Fellowships at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix Arizona (one in Endovascular Neurosurgery and the other in Cerebrovascular and Skull Base Surgery). Respected among peers and understanding the importance of , Dr. Sultan quickly advanced to the position of Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of Endovascular Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Opportunity giving way to present day, Dr. Sultan currently holds the title of Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at the Harvard Medical School, and Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, all the while pursuing a degree in Master of Business Administration at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology which he completed in the Spring of 2019.
Dr. Sultan’s main area of interest both in patient care and clinical research is cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery. Throughout his career, Dr. Sultan has served as Course Director for numerous endovascular courses in the US. He is the site Principal Investigator for several important, multi-centric prospective trials in the field of endovascular neurosurgery. Since 2016, he is the national Principal Investigator for the Apollo Onyx Delivery Micro Catheter Post Market Safety Study, a multi-institutional, prospective study evaluating the safety and efficacy of a novel microcatheter on the endovascular treatment of brain arteriovenous malformations. Dr. Sultan has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and is an ad hoc editor for several of the most prominent neurosurgical publications, such as the Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery, and World Neurosurgery. In his time at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Sultan has also served as the director of the BWH Stroke Camp (an opportunity for stroke survivors to reflect, connect, and enjoy a break from feeling like a “stroke patient”), as well as pioneered, with the help of many individuals in multiple disciplines, the JCAHO certification of Brigham and Women’s Hospital as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, for which he serves as Surgical Director.
Dr. Sultan’s most impactful contributions have been in the field of education. He has been involved in training of over 60 residents 25 fellows in neurosurgery. He has also used his platform at Harvard to tell his story as a young Afghan refugee who fled a war torn country at the age of six to eventually come to the United States. The opportunities afforded by education has allowed him to practice medicine in an unparalleled environment. He has given these stories of hope and resilience as invited professor at Universities and to the Afghan American Conference aimed towards the youth.
