Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Global Health

Michael Haglund is a Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery, Global Health, and Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at Duke University. As the Division Chief of the Duke Global Neurosurgery and Neurology (DGNN), he oversees a team of over 100 faculty, graduate, medical students, and neurosurgery residents working in East Africa, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. His team has been working in Uganda for over 16 years, delivering over 120 tons of medical equipment and supplies worth over 15 million USD. DGNN has developed two training programs in Uganda and trained fourteen neurosurgeons, with 24 more in the training program as of 2025. Three Neurosurgery Units have been established. DGNN has also led a focused effort in Epilepsy, establishing the first Epilepsy Clinic in Uganda that sees over 1,500 patients annually. Dr. Haglund also obtained his Master's in Education, and his thesis project focused on Vygotsky's Social Learning Theory that developed into the Surgical Autonomy Program used to teach and evaluate both residents and faculty in the operating room. Providing formative feedback, development of resident metacognitive skills, and progressive autonomy in neurosurgical training.
