She began work as an editorial assistant to Harvey Cushing in 1915. After editing his book on acoustic tumors, she decided to enter Tufts Medical School. She went on to become Dr. Cushing’s junior associate in surgery from 1928-1924, when she moved to Yale with him to establish the brain tumor registry.
