    This award was established in 1977 at the recommendation of Dr. Lester A. Mount and the first recipient of this honor was Frank Mayfield. As the Association's most prestigious and highest honor, the Cushing Medal is awarded to an AANS member for outstanding service to the AANS and the neurosurgical community.
