Introduction: Brain biopsies are essential diagnostic procedures used to obtain tissue samples from the brain for microscopic examination, providing definitive diagnoses for a range of neurological conditions including tumors, infections, and inflammatory or neurodegenerative diseases. Despite advances in imaging techniques, biopsies remain the gold standard for histopathological evaluation, offering insights that guide personalized treatment plans. Several biopsy techniques are employed based on clinical need. Stereotactic biopsy is the most common, and other techniques such as free hand needle biopsy, Navigation guided biopsy, open craniotomy and biopsy, and endoscopic biopsies are also used. All different techniques has their advantages and disadvantages.
Methods: This is retrospective study of 300 biopsy cases taken between January 2017 till April 2024.This study was carried at National Neurosurgical Referral Center, NAMS Bir Hospital
Results: Several biopsy techniques are employed based on clinical need. Stereotactic biopsy is the most common, and other techniques such as free hand needle biopsy, Navigation guided biopsy, open craniotomy and biopsy, and endoscopic biopsies are also used. All different techniques has their advantages and disadvantages.
Conclusion : Though they carry risks such as bleeding or infection, advancements in techniques and technology have significantly improved the safety and effectiveness of brain biopsies, making them a critical tool in neurological care.
